Hot water heat pumps, installed for a Dunedin winter
Hot water is one of the biggest costs on your power bill. A heat pump hot water cylinder heats it using only around a third of the power.
Is your hot water costing more every winter?
Sound familiar?
Your power bill creeps up every winter. The hot water runs out before the last person has showered. The cylinder you've got was sized for a smaller household. If any of that sounds familiar, a hot water heat pump is worth a look.
Is your cylinder past its best?
If your hot water cylinder was put in before 2002, it's likely to be poorly insulated, so it loses heat day and night and you pay for that on your power bill. Older low-pressure systems are also behind the weak showers and slow taps many households have simply got used to. A hot water heat pump fixes both: mains pressure, and far less power to heat the same water.
How a heat pump works
A heat pump doesn't heat water with an element. It uses a small amount of electricity to pull warmth from the outside air and move it into your cylinder. Moving heat takes far less power than making it.
Sized for your household
A heat pump that's the wrong size underperforms from day one. We size it to how much hot water your household actually uses, not just the number of bedrooms. A family of four usually needs 200 to 300 litres.
Heat pump or gas?
A gas water heater burns fuel. A heat pump moves heat, so it uses far less energy to do the same job. EECA puts a heat pump at around 60% cheaper to run than piped gas, and 75% cheaper than LPG. New Zealand's electricity is mostly renewable, so a heat pump produces far less CO2 than gas, with no flame, no flue and no gas leak to think about.
What a heat pump saves you
Running cost figures from EECA, the Government's energy efficiency agency.

60% cheaper to run
Compared with a standard electric cylinder or piped gas, a heat pump costs around 60% less to run, and that saving comes through on every power bill.

A third of the power
A heat pump moves warmth from the air instead of making heat, so it uses about a third of the electricity a standard cylinder needs to heat the same water.

75% cheaper than LPG
If your home runs on bottled gas, this is where the biggest savings are. No more bottle swaps, delivery charges or running out mid-shower.
Why consider a hot water heat pump?
Most people buy a heat pump to save money, but budget units often struggle once the temperature drops. Below about 5 degrees, a low-cost unit can't pull enough warmth from the cold air, so it switches to a standard electric element and uses up to four times the power, just when your bill is highest. Rinnai heat pumps use variable speed compressors and micro channel heat exchangers, so they keep drawing warmth from the air down to minus 10 degrees. In a hard cold snap, the element gives a short boost rather than doing the heating, so your running costs stay low through winter.

Rinnai HydraHeat 275 litre
For households of two to five people. Efficiency rating 4.7.

Rinnai HydraHeat 340 litre
For larger households of up to seven people. Efficiency rating 4.7.

Panasonic CO2 Hot Water Heat Pump
For large families and commercial installations. Up to 70% lower running costs than an electric hot water cylinder, with natural CO2 refrigerant that has zero ozone depletion and a very low global warming potential. Efficiency rating 5.
How we install it
Placed in the right spot
We place the unit to the manufacturer's clearance recommendations, on a level, solid base and away from bedroom windows, yours or the neighbours'.
Smart controls set up
We set up the smart control panel, connect it to your Wi-Fi (some models) and program the run times, including 10am to 3pm heating if you have solar panels, so it runs on your own power.
Electrical and drainage done properly
We engage a qualified electrician to complete the electrical work. They'll make sure your old water heater is disconnected safely and install new cabling where needed, so the installation is code compliant. We run the condensate drain line so it won't freeze in a Dunedin winter, and every installation comes with our workmanship guarantee.
What’s included
An assessment with one of our technicians before any work starts, delivery and connection to your existing plumbing, and the manufacturer's warranty (for Rinnai HydraHeat, 5 years on the heat pump and 7 years on the cylinder), plus our workmanship guarantee. We'll engage a qualified electrician to complete the electrical work.
Common questions
How much does a hot water heat pump cost?
A heat pump costs more to buy and install than a standard cylinder, and the price depends on the unit and your home. After a free assessment, we'll quote for your house. Once running costs are counted, EECA rates a hot water heat pump the cheapest option over time.
How loud is a hot water heat pump?
Hot water heat pumps are quiet. They run at around 45 to 46 decibels, about the same as a quiet dishwasher. Before we install, we'll work with you to choose the best spot for your heat pump. We look for a place where you won't be bothered by it, and where it can connect easily to your existing plumbing to keep the installation cost down.
Will I run out of hot water faster than with my old cylinder?
We make sure your hot water heat pump is sized for your household. While hot water heat pumps take a little longer to heat water than an element, they're far more efficient, use much less power and are better for the planet.
How long do hot water heat pumps last?
With proper installation and regular maintenance, you can expect your hot water heat pump to last 10 to 15 years. Routine servicing will help keep your system running efficiently and reliably for years to come.
Do I need special electrical work?
Usually, yes. Most installations need a new circuit, because older water heaters are often on a smaller circuit than a heat pump needs. At your site assessment we check your switchboard, and we engage a qualified electrician to complete the electrical work. They'll make sure your old water heater is disconnected safely and install new cabling where needed, so the installation is code compliant.
Will it work with my solar panels?
Yes. We can set a timer to heat your water during the day, between 10am and 3pm, so it runs on your solar power instead of power from the grid.
What are the benefits of mains pressure?
Mains pressure means strong showers and fast taps. Some older pipes and fittings may need upgrading, and we'll include any work needed in your fixed price once we've completed your site inspection.
Not sure if now's the right time?
If the hot water runs out before everyone's showered, your household has grown, or your winter power bill keeps creeping up, it's worth a quick conversation. One of our technicians will come and look at your home, answer your questions and give you an honest view on whether a heat pump makes sense for you. No pressure, no obligation.
